Sharing the load

Carrying large and heavy loads on their back is a very common practice in Nepal. For many, it is the only way transporting goods.

Children at the Art Centre in Bhaktapur Nepal are depicting the lives of those in their community in their drama workshops. In these images they are showing how this carrying is done – the lifting and lowering on and off the back, the position of the hands, the band that takes the weight across the head.

In one of their drama skits, we were shown a story of one person who had a hole in their basket and was losing all their goods through it. Rather than becoming the butt of a joke, the skit depicted a member of the community alerting the man to the hole and helping him pick up the lost goods. It gave us another insight in the way these people interact with each other.
